Childbirth Preparation Class

The Spinning Babies® Parent Class — learn to make room for your baby, together with your birth partner.

What is Spinning Babies®?

Spinning Babies® is an approach to childbirth that helps you get more comfort in pregnancy and ease in birth. The Parent Class highlights your baby’s active role in birth: during labor, your baby needs to pass through three levels of the pelvis, and you’ll learn techniques that help your pelvis and its muscles support each level. Together, you and your birth partner can use these techniques before and during labor to help “make room for your baby.” Learn more at SpinningBabies.com.

This class is for expectant parents — birth professionals are referred to the Spinning Babies® Workshop. The Parent Class is not a comprehensive childbirth education class; you are recommended to take one if you can.

About the educator

Spinning Babies® Certified Parent Educator (SpBCPE)

Catherine Allen (she/her), Spinning Babies® Certified Parent Educator, prenatal yoga teacher of 20 years, and certified doula, offers Spinning Babies® Parent Classes in Houston, Texas, and live online. Cat used the Spinning Babies® approach in her own pregnancy and labor and believes in its revolutionary philosophy for childbirth — one that encourages the birthing person to make informed choices and helps strengthen the bond between parents and baby. She offers semi-private and private classes.

What the class is like

In person

A fun and interactive 3-hour experiential class. You’ll be guided through a light and accessible prenatal yoga class to balance your body, then learn body-balancing practices — such as the Three Sisters of Balance — to do with your partner or birth support person. You’ll practice specific labor positions that open each level of the pelvis to make as much room as possible for your baby to descend and rotate through. After class, you’ll receive handouts and a special e-companion book to help you review.

Live online

Up to 2 hours. You reserve a spot, then watch the 2-hour Parent Class on the Spinning Babies website beforehand. When we meet online, you’ll practice the yoga, the balancing techniques, and the labor positions together, with real-time feedback and answers to your questions — plus the same handouts and e-companion book.

Why attend live?

  1. If you have pain or tension in a pose, Cat can tailor it to your individual needs.
  2. During partner work and labor positions, Cat can confirm you’re doing it correctly and offer feedback.
  3. Cat can answer any questions you have.

Who is this class for?

Anyone who is pregnant! The best time to take this class is around 20 weeks gestation, but it is never too early or too late to start balancing your body. The sooner you take it, the more time you have to practice — and the more prepared you are before labor, the more supported and empowered you’ll be during it. This class serves:

  • First-time births
  • Second or third-time births — no two births are the same
  • Cesarean birth — everyone deserves support and comfort, no matter what kind of birth
  • VBAC
  • Free birth, home birth, birth-center birth, and hospital birth

What to bring

  • Loose, comfortable clothes you can move and breathe in
  • Yoga mat
  • Large body towel
  • Bottle of water
  • 2 pillows

Questions parents ask

I don’t have a birth partner or birth support person.

Let Cat know, and she’ll help you find a partner for the class. She will show you how to do these poses and exercises without a partner — you will still reap the benefits.

I’m very flexible — I dance, lift weights, do yoga. Would I benefit from this class?

Yes, you will! If you do a lot of intense body movement, or if you sit a lot, you might have an excessively tense pelvic floor. The myofascial release techniques in the Spinning Babies® approach help balance your soft tissues by releasing excess tension — including in the pelvic floor — for more comfort in pregnancy and ease in birth.

My last birth was fast and easy. Do I need this class?

No two births are the same. A prior “easy” birth doesn’t mean your next will be — and the Spinning Babies® approach counterbalances the tensions and stress that come with modern life.

I don’t do yoga. Can I still take this class?

Yes, you can. Cat will teach you accessible, simple yoga poses and customize each pose or exercise especially for you.
